Wath Academy Sixth Form has a proud history and proven track record of developing well rounded students who have the qualifications, skills and character to go on and life happy successful lives. The enrichment opportunities on offer are extensive and provide a range of extra-curricular and academic pursuits. Wednesday afternoons are timetabled for enrichment activities and all students are expected to take part.

Academic Support

Sixth Form students are offered a wide range of extracurricular clubs to support their academic achievement. These are open to Y12 and Y13 students and include drop-in clinics as well as more formally organised revision sessions.

Extended Project Qualification

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is a stand-alone course that provides the chance for each student to embark on a largely self-directed and self-motivated project. Students must choose a topic, plan, research and develop their idea and decide on their finished product.

We encourage creativity and curiosity. A project topic may be directly related to a student's main study programme, but should look beyond the specification. It provides 50% of the UCAS points on offer for full A-Level qualification and therefore has more value than the 40% which is on offer for an AS Level qualification. The EPQ is well received by universities who are known to lower their entry requirements for students with strong EPQ grades.

Core Maths

The Core Maths Qualification is designed to challenge students with meaningful mathematical problems that increase their confidence and competency when using maths. Students on this course will most certainly be better equipped for the mathematical demands of other courses, higher education, employment and life.

This course is ideal for students wishing to carry on studying maths, but not the A Level. It is suitable for students who are studying Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Economics and Business. It is a linear qualification that is completed in May/June of Year 13 and has the same UCAS points as an AS Level Qualification. Students need a grade 5 or above in GCSE maths.

Further Maths

Students completing the AS Further Maths qualification study topics in Pure Mathematics, Statistics and Mechanics that build on their A-level Maths studies. Initially, the course gives a breadth of study, learning further algebraic techniques and proof alongside mathematical modelling of real world situations. Later, students focus much more on extending their repertoire of analytical methods and developing their knowledge and understanding of pure mathematics.

Extra Curricular

House and Inter-school Competitions

The Sixth Form is part of the whole school House System and each tutor group represents one of the six houses (Athens, Carthage, Rome, Thebes, Troy and Sparta). Year 12 students can apply for the position of House Captain and be responsible for the organisation and promotion of House activities.

Experience Passport

The Wath Academy Experience Passport advocates exposure to a wide range of age-appropriate, life-enriching experiences. Experiences will be organised by the Academy to help you complete the activities in the passport, and you can include out of school experiences as well. The passport ensures that you have experiences outside the ‘everyday norm’ that will give you the confidence to make brave choices beyond your time at Wath Academy.

The passport comprises a list of experiences that you should aim to complete by the end of each academic year. They are grouped together and include:

• Religion and Culture: e.g. visits to religious landmarks, participation in an unfamiliar religious festival and cultural visits to an opera.
• Sport and Outdoors: e.g. physical challenges, outdoor pursuits, climbing a mountain and attending an international sports fixture.
• Heritage: e.g. visits to the Houses of Parliament, museums and English Heritage/National Trust sites.
• Careers and Enterprise: e.g. creating a company and raising a profit.
• World and Travel: e.g. visiting a European capital city
• Community: e.g. charity events, clean-up projects, local projects and the Race for Life.

Music

The School Band practice and perform throughout the academic year, providing musicians with the chance to showcase their talents at well attended evenings such as the Christmas Concert and Piano evening to name but a few.

Drama

Students have the chance to audition for the school Pantomime and other productions such as the Murder Mystery night.

Dance

Each year the Performing Arts Department produces the Gym Dance and Movement evening. This is a highlight of the school year and for many Sixth Formers a rite of passage.

Sports and Fitness

The PE department offer a range of sporting activities and teams including Football, Rugby, Netball and Hockey. We have a well resourced and modern fitness suite that can be used by Sixth Form students at no cost.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

The Duke of Edinburgh award is challenging yet rewarding course undertaken by Sixth Form students. This certainly gives them an advantage when making future applications to University and prospective employers. What is the DofE? - The Duke of Edinburgh's Award

In class support

Students have the opportunity to work alongside teachers 1-2 lessons per week to provide support for students in younger years in the subject of your choice. This is particularly useful for those wishing to pursue a career in teaching.

Senior Students and Students Voice

The Student Voice is very active throughout the whole school and is a key driving force behind strategic decisions, in order to ultimately raise standards and ensure an outstanding school experience for all students.

Year 13 students can apply for responsibility positions such as Head Boy / Girl and Deputy Head Boy / Girl and Senior Student.

Sixth Form students have numerous opportunities to take on leadership roles within the school council or act as student ambassadors. They take key leadership roles across a range of Action Groups where they guide younger pupils in the discussion, planning and implementation of new initiatives that will benefit the whole school.

Work Experience

All students are encouraged to undertake work experience. This is a valuable opportunity which will help students gain relevant experience of the real-life working environment as well as helping to identify possible future career paths. It is particularly important that students wishing to study degree courses such as teaching, social work, medicine, dentistry, veterinary and nursing gain relevant experience as this is usually a requirement of course entry criteria.

All Year 12 students undertake a one week work placement in the half term following their AS examinations. Students also have the option to arrange an ongoing placement utilising the Wednesday afternoon enrichment time.
