Wath and Wales Crowned Champions in First-Ever Girls’ Rotherham Cup Finals
Wath Academy Win Year 7 Thriller, While Wales High School Pull Away After Tight Year 8/9 Battle
The first-ever Girls’ Rotherham Schools Cup Finals delivered a landmark evening of football on Tuesday 20th May 2025, with Wath Academy and Wales High School lifting the silverware after two thrilling encounters at Wath Academy.
In the Year 7 final, Wath Academy edged Wickersley School 3-2 in a dramatic contest full of heart and quality. Goals from Darcey W, Blossom F, and Ruby G proved the difference in a back-and-forth battle. Wickersley gave a strong account of themselves, finding the net twice and threatening throughout, but Wath held on for a well-deserved victory, claiming the RSFA U12 Cup in style.
The Year 8/9 final between Wales High School and Wath Academy was just as memorable, with the two sides locked at 2-2 at half-time in an evenly contested first period. Wath matched their opponents for much of the opening half, showing grit and determination to keep pace with a free-flowing Wales attack.
However, the second half belonged to Wales, who turned up the pressure and took control of the match. Star forward Phoebe Rinkcavage delivered a sensational performance, scoring four goals in a dominant display that helped her side pull away and secure a 6-2 victory. Her sharp movement, composure in front of goal, and relentless work rate earned her a special mention and the admiration of spectators.
The triumph capped an unbeaten cup run for Wales and saw them crowned RSFA U14 Trophy champions in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
The finals were hosted at Wath Academy and delivered in partnership with Maltby Learning Trust, marking the first ever girls-only Rotherham Cup Finals Day—a historic step forward for school sport in the borough.
With thrilling matches, passionate support, and standout performances from players across the board, the 2025 Girls' Rotherham Cup Finals set a high bar for the future and underlined the growing strength of girls' football in Rotherham.
