Physical & Sensory Impairment

Wath Academy has a dedicated Physical / Sensory Team. Our main aim is to make Wath Academy as accessible to a student with a disability as to an able-bodied student. We try to ensure physical education, educational visits, technology lessons and other practical subjects are fully accessible. Any student with a physical disability should feel they can take part in every aspect of school life and be safe and supported in doing so.

  • First Aid
  • Child Protection
  • Emergency Evacuation
  • Physiotherapy.

The Site

Every part of the school is accessible to wheelchair, walking frame or other physical aid users. All floors are accessible by lifts, which can comfortably accommodate a power wheelchair. All main entrances and exits are wheelchair friendly. Our PE Block is also accessible to wheelchair users. Standard classrooms are equipped with a height adjustable desk.

The school has a fully furnished physiotherapy suite known as the 'Parkin Suite', which has fitted H Frame hoists and a physiotherapy table.

There are a number of disabled toilets around school, including the clos-o-mat toilet with hoist which gives our physically impaired students independence. The school also has a 'wet room' for washing and showering.

Our emergency evacuation team consists of 14 specially trained staff. All evacuation procedures are risk assessed for each individual student. We have a Stairmate Major Evacuation machine and Evac Chairs to assist in the evacuation of physically impaired students.

Physiotherapy

The team liaises with NHS physiotherapists and carries out routine exercises. NHS physiotherapists visit our students once every half term.
