Young carers are children under the age of 18, who help look after a member of the family who has a disability, struggles with substance misuse or has a long term physical or mental illness. The young carers take on practical and / or emotional caring responsibilities that would normally be expected of an adult.
The life of the child or young person, under the age of 18 is restricted in some way because they need to take care of that person.
Young carers may feel they are missing out on opportunities that other children have to play and learn.
Children are not classed as a young carer if:
- They undertake tasks around the home appropriate to their age.
- Care for someone with a short term illness or injury e.g. a broken arm.
- Care for their own children.
If you feel your child meets the criteria of a 'Young Carer', Barnardo’s young carers can offer your child or young person the following:
- Time limited groups.
- Summer activities.
- Safe place.
- Individual support.
- Information and advice.
- Support to access other services.
- Their own worker.
